You sit and stare into your coffee
and the smell
reminds you
that
bills are stacked on the kitchen table
the sink is full of tea stained coffee mugs
you haven’t fed the cat
in two days

Then the phone rings

It’s mother
and you’re a child again

just a voice can take you back to those days when responsibilities weren’t a concern …loved this, very real, very true .Thank you x

  3. I’m trying to decide, in that situation, if hearing from my mum would be a good thing or a bad thing (much though I love her)… Got me thinking (which is a sign that I like something)!

surrounded by slightly-colder-than-i’d-like coffee, and a stack of bills… maybe i need a phone call.

    excellent capture of the moment

Nice slice of life, Anton. Might be time for comfort food – would that be macaroni and cheese for you — probably not. Maybe a cooked English breakfast. I could make that for you. Give you mum a call. We like hearing from our sons. Hope you’re well. I think of you often. Thanks, G.

  6. it is hard to grow up and take on so many responsibilities but this is part of growing up we are given them as children and as time goes on we are handed more and more

  8. Wow. Wow. Your day in the life is awesome! I love those thoughts…. I just found myself sitting at home with them rushing through me….. So few words exquisitely placed and absolutely real…… wonderful, understandable, approachable, nice poem….

Thank you for the comments everyone. This is one of those cases where the readers own the poem in a totally different way than it was written…

think i would’ve read it the same way…but after seeing your comment…it’s always the smells that bring me back as well…to pleasant and unpleasant memories…i unplugged the phone…just to feel safe..

  11. Wait, is the poem about my life?

    🙂
